One key debate in political economy has been the historical transition to capitalism. While the debates are certainly not settled and there is much at stake in understanding how capitalism emerged and developed, what might be an interesting question to pose is not so much how capitalism originated but what might capitalism look like in the 21st century? To explore this question, this paper considers the dominant tendencies that shaped capitalism as it emerged in a geopolitical and inter-societal fashion, eventually leading to the capitalization of corporate and governmental power as it became wedded to fossil fuels.
