Co-op City Democracy and the Privatization Controversy

There are only 160,000 limited-equity cooperative units in the entire United States (UHAB 2016), and this alternative form of residential community is concentrated in New York City. Co-op City, the largest housing cooperative in the country with some 50,000 inhabitants, has a uniquely vibrant civil society and self-government. This paper shows how the relatively dense "social capital' of this alternative community contributes to lively democratic practices and in turn, staved off repeated efforts to privatize the housing complex.
