The ongoing Struggle between Capitalist and Communist Globalization

This paper will trace out, since the early development and global domination of capitalism, the ongoing struggle between capitalist globalization and an emerging socialist/communist globalization as a dialectical countertendency. Our approach will proceed at various, interdependent and dialectically intertwined levels of analysis, and various levels of abstraction, including global capitalist ecology, the mode of production and the development of productive forces, social structures and political organization, and cultural or super-structural phenomena associated with subjective and ideological conditions. Particular attention will be paid to the evolving contradiction between transnational/globalizing tendencies, often captured by conceptualizations such as transnational or totalitarian capitalism, and the system of nation-states, as well as to conjunctural circumstances, the recurrent crises of capitalism, and a secular exacerbation of socio-ecological crisis on a global level. These considerations will allow a more adequate answer to the question whether the current globalization will proceed more or less unabated or if it will be checked by emerging nationalist tendencies and international contradictions. Our dialectical and integrative approach will moreover allow a realistic assessment of the prospects of revolutionary social changes in a communist direction.
